Handcraft in Mexico is an integral aspect of the economy of small towns and villages. This is just how the
monks planned it. Whole villages became more and more self-supporting and it was this concept that inspired
Father Miguel Hidalgo to encourage the people to declare their independence from Spain -- a revolution begun almost exactly 200 years ago. Cut tin mirrors and figures are made by hand reusing colorful tin cans. Brilliant plastic woven baskets are made by prisoners as a part of a project that provides for their families. And there is more to come as I explore for more contemporary treasures. Please feel free to contact me by phone 818/761-8641 or email allene@lacasitamia.com.
